Currently, the problem of electronic waste has become the new focus for environmentally-concerned people. As indicated by the latest statistic figures issued by the Ministry of Information Industry, the amount of cell phone subscribers in China has reached 480,000,000. The ever-faster updating of cell phone produces more and more waste cell phones which with their accessories are generally treated as standard garbage and throw away with domestic garbage. The large amount of electronic waste production and wrong treatment has posed tremendous threat to the environment.

To solve the problem, on December 2005, CMCC joined hands with Motorola and Nokia to launch the environmental protection campaign "Green Box Environmental Protection Plan". Ever since the campaign was started, the concern and support from various cell phone manufacturers and consumers have been earned.

To further promote the fashion life of environmental-friendly telecommunication, regulate and perfect the recycling system, CMCC initiated this Green Box Environmental Protection—517 Special Event.

The leaders from the Bureau of Environmental Protection have given high praise to the campaign and they reckon that CMCC has brought a wonderful beginning to solving the problem of telecommunication environmental protection. They also pointed out that the recycling of electronic garbage is a systematic project which requires the mutual participation of environmental supervision, industrial hygiene and safety, administration of industry and commerce, manufacturers, recyclers and consumers. However, for the time being, Chinese electronic garbage recycling has just started and there is a long way to go.

To address that, Yuejia Sha, the vice-president of CMCC expressed that "Green Box Environmental Protection Plan is a long-term one which will further promote the environmental protection awareness of the mass more efficiently. To date, the Project has become a joint operation involve multiple parties and with more and more enterprises and consumers participating, the project will further activate all links on the chain of waste cell phone and accessories recycling and form a complete recycling system for them in recycling economy, making its contribution to China's 11th Five-Year Plan—becoming a energy-saving and environmental friendly society.
