China Mobile has been with the Olympic Torch Relay every step of the way, ensuring officials and organizers have had secure and stable mobile communications.

China Mobile was with the Olympic flame as it ascended the icy heights of Qomolongma (Mount Everest), steamed through the tropics of Hainan Island, and finally carried along the streets of old Beijing to the ultra modern Olympic Stadium.

As the picture gallery below shows, accompanying the Olympic flame has not only been a huge effort but a great honour. China Mobile and its staff have been happy to be an integral part of this historic run.

As an official partner of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, China Mobile has spared no expense in fulfilling its commitment to provide the relay team unbroken communications.

Perhaps the biggest challenge of the relay was scaling the peak at Qomolongma. China Mobile staff worked for months installing the world’s highest mobile phone base station at 6,500 meters above sea level. The specially designed, high-altitude equipment that allowed for the transmission of mobile phone pictures from near the peak was installed with the help of a team of sturdy Tibetan porters and their yaks.

During the March ascent, China Mobile also provided hundreds of officials and journalists at Qomolangma’s base station with mobile communications, including high speed internet.

As the Olympic flame traversed mainland China it was met with huge crowds of cheering spectators who lined the runners’ routes. Behind the scenes, before the runners and fans arrived, China Mobile’s technicians setup mobile bases stations as a double-safe measure ensuring nothing would interfere with communications.

As the picture gallery below shows, it’s been a proud and historic march for the Olympic flame. Thousands of China Mobile’s employees across the country also joined the parade route to cheer on the flame.
