Green Mobile Communications

China Mobile’s new GSM base station in the National Stadium, dubbed the Bird’s Nest, could be up to 70 percent more efficient than standard urban GSM stations.

The new Flexi GSM Base Station, supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), is the first of its kind in China and is reputed to be the smallest and most energy efficient base station on the market.

Head of NSN Greater China Region Zhang Zhiqiang said it could save up to 73,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions a year – equivalent to the emissions of 21,000 cars – in a large metropolitan network of about 5,000 base stations.

The move is part of China Mobile’s Green Action Plan to increase energy efficiency by 40 percent by 2010, compared with 2005 levels. This will preempt the emission of more than 6.8 million tons of CO2, equivalent to 2.7 million tons of standard coal energy or taking more than 1.7 million vehicles off the road for a year.

Green Education

A total of 120,000 copies of a new textbook discussing Olympics-related environmental issues, including the construction of infrastructure and competition venues, have been distributed to middle school students in Beijing and Games co-host cities.

Sponsored by China Mobile and the All-China Environment Federation (ACEF), the Environmental Education Reader is intended to teach the students about the necessity of environmental protection.

The books are considered a way to bring the important concept of the Beijing Games Green Olympics to the next generation.

Green Box Campaign

China Mobile has launched a “Green Box” campaign to collect used cell phones, batteries and accessories in an attempt to prevent environmental degradation.

Phone users can leave old phones and components in special recycling boxes in China Mobile service centers and other places across the country.

The campaign aims to raise public awareness of earth and water pollution caused by electronic waste and the necessity to dispose of electronic products safely.
