China Mobile Searches for “Silent Users”
22th May, 2008

China Mobile has managed to contact more than 10,000 subscribers whose phones went ‘silent’ after the earthquake in Sichuan on May 12.

During the first five days following the earthquake, the Sichuan Branch of China Mobile monitored more than 50,000 phones in Chengdu, Deyang and Guangyuan which went ‘silent’ after they did not respond to text messages or calls sent by China Mobile.

From May 12 to 16, China Mobile sent daily messages and made calls to these silent users. Eventually 10,000 people answered the calls or responded to the text messages. Most users reported that they were safe and told China Mobile they were grateful the company had made the effort to contact them.

As of today, China Mobile’s “10086 Love Hotline” had received 331,000 calls from people asking for information about the disaster. China Mobile operators working on the ‘Love Hotline’ made calls or sent messages to 68,000 users who were in the worst-hit areas. The operators also delivered ‘I am safe” messages for 22,000 users and contacted the families of 18,097 subscribers in the devastated regions.
