China Mobile’s emergency repair crews have restored mobile communications to 56 of the 70 most damaged towns and villages in Sichuan Province.
The government provided a priority list of 70 hardest hit towns and villages, and China Mobile is concentrating its emergency repair crews in those areas.
On the afternoon of May 20 alone, China Mobile emergency teams airlifted satellite base stations to the towns and villages of Qianjin, Yuli, Wolong, Piankou, and Shuimo.
Each satellite base station can provide mobile communications service for more than 200 callers.
As of May 20 China Mobile had restored 3,803 base stations that were knocked out of service by the devastating May 12 earthquake. 654 base stations remain in need of repair in Sichuan and Gansu provinces.
Earlier China Mobile targeted 169 prioritized towns and villages in the eight worst hit counties for emergency service. To date the company has been able to restore communication links to 93 of those towns and villages.
