China stood still in a display of mass respect on 19 May to mourn those who died in the 8.0-magnitude earthquake centered in Sichuan Province.

All China Mobile employees stopped whatever they were doing for the silent tribute as sirens and horns wailed across China. The three-minute moment of remembrance began at 14:28, exactly a week after the earthquake struck.

The tragedy, which is centered in the small county of Wenchuan in a mountainous area of Sichuan Province, has rocked the emotions of all of us at China Mobile. Many of China Mobile’s senior management team shared the moment of mourning with managers and employees of Sichuan branch in the city of Chengdu. At China Mobile headquarters in Beijing the auditorium was packed for the tearful and sombre remembrance.

In each and every one of China Mobile offices – in every province, city and county – employees stopped to remember those who died after the earthquake struck on 12 May, a date that will sadden our hearts forever.

Seven China Mobile employees remain missing after their office in Beichuan County collapsed on 12 May. Another China Mobile employee sacrificed his life while attempting to restore communications network. Our hearts are with their families.
