China Mobile’s emergency response teams have been airlifted to areas worst hit by the massive earth quake that has devastated central Sichuan Province. The military flew China Mobile’s to the quake’s epicentre Wenchuan county and Qingchuan county of Guangyuan city as well as Pingwu county of Mianyang city, in Sichuan Province.

China Mobile’s crews equipped with satellite phones are providing emergency mobile communication services for rescuers, repairing cell towers and helping local residents contact relatives.

China Mobile’s top managers, including President Wang Jianzhou, have flown to Sichuan Province to help supervise the restoration of mobile communication services in the areas worst hit by the May 12 earthquake.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake knocked out 4,457 base stations, but almost 2,000 of them have been repaired. Mobile services still remain affected over a wide range of areas in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces.

China Mobile has dispatched 11 emergency communication vehicles and 160 generators to the area. Fifteen satellite phones and 10 mobile base stations have also been sent to Sichuan.

Once a base station gets repaired, China Mobile immediately begins broadcasting emergency information and disaster relief news to cell phone users in the area via text messages.

China Mobile has also set up service centers in disaster areas where survivors are gathering. At these centers survivors can charge their phone batteries or get their damaged phones repaired. China Mobile will also not cut cell phone service when a subscriber’s airtime runs out.

China Mobile’s branch offices in the disaster area have also been using every available resource to facilitate the local governments in their rescue missions. Two disaster relief hotlines have been established that they can provide information to local disaster relief centers and the local people. The hotlines are collecting and disseminating information to help in the coordination of the relief effort.
