CMCC Public Service SMS Contest Ends
4.75 million RMB Donation Helps Students in Central and Western China
April 18, 2007

On 18th April, the three-month long “Proposing Civilization with Love” public service SMS contest came to an end and the awards ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People. Leaders from the Directing Committee of Central Spiritual Civilization Construction and CMCC were there and spoke at the event. Representatives of the examiners and Nokia (as special supporter) awarded the composers of the Best SMS and “Love Ambassadors” from different provinces in China. Meanwhile, CMCC donated the 4,750,955.4 RMB generated from the competition to the China Education Development Foundation to support impoverished students from central and western China.

At the ceremony, Sha Yuejia, vice president of CMCC, said that the event was a good way to promote suitable SMS behavior. The event was aimed at promoting the creation and distribution of SMS containing healthy content. From the date the campaign was launched on 11th December 2006 to 5th March 2007 when it ended, messages composed, downloaded and forwarded exceeded 42 million times. During the event, every day more than 500,000 users took part and this figure exceeded 800,000 during the Spring Festival. In addition, over 100 million messages were sent via the platform of the event. During the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, messages which embodied “civilization” and “love” were passed to every corner of China and helped build a harmonious atmosphere.

The entire 4.75 million RMB donation, on the principle of “special fund should be used for special purpose in an open and transparent system and in a way to make both ends meet”, was used as the initial contribution to the “CMCC Special Fund of China Education Development Foundation,” sponsoring primary school and high school students from impoverished families in ten provinces and cities such as Ningxia, Chongqing, and Shanxi. To ensure honesty and demonstrate transparency, the China Education Development Foundation regularly provides information on the status of the fund and publishes its progress and a list of people it has helped on its website. In this way, the foundation is supervised by society. The foundation charges no administrative expenses for the fund.

When attending the event, leaders from the office of the Directing Committee of Central Spiritual Civilization Construction said that the event not only, helped improvised children but also improved people’s usage of SMS and guided people’s habits and responses. This is the first attempt at promoting spiritual civilization using new technologies.

In order to create a healthy SMS culture, Nokia sponsored 3350 mobile phones which have strong music-related functions. High-ranking leaders gave awards to “love ambassadors” at the ceremony.

On the matter of unhealthy SMS, the participants proposed “Utilization Protocol of SMS” which contains seven proposals such as “civilized wording”, “clear expression”, “rejection of pornographic SMS” and “attention to standard grammar.” Targeting all mobile phone users, the event is aimed at promoting good habits when sending SMS.

To demonstrate the event’s achievements, and widely spread the spirit of “love” and “civilization”, CMCC collected and compiled some outstanding SMS into SMS pictorials and held unveiling ceremony for the pictorials at the donation ceremony. CMCC Vice-president Sha said that as a responsible state-owned enterprise, the corporation will uphold the corporate spirit of “Responsibility Makes Perfection”, maintain the excellent quality of “Mobile Information Expert”, promote healthy and integrate information consumption, promote the prosperity of information utilization and enhance social construction with the spirit of “information harmony”.
